Northern California abstract artist Lissa Rankin embraces the serenity of painting in her latest series, which focuses on the luminescent and tactile qualities of white and cream-colored encaustic on wood panel. "In the absence of color choice, I find myself more easily able to become one with the process of painting, in its purest state. The resulting state of contemplative spirituality allows me to channel inner energy, flow, and conflict into the compositions of the pieces, seeking to deconstruct and unify my own inner turmoil into a peaceful resolution in my art," Rankin explains.

As the author of the upcoming book Encaustic & Beyond: A Guide to Creating Fine Art With Wax, Rankin has traveled across the country to meet with the artists she has chosen to contribute to her book, and in the process, her understanding of and approach to encaustic painting has been enriched and deepened: "In the process of visiting and interviewing these artists' studios, I have changed as an artist and a writer, and the book has metamorphosed over the years to reflect how I have grown," Lissa writes in an excerpt from the book. She continues, "By its very nature, artists who work with encaustic have to be willing to relinquish some element of control. The wax has a mind of its own, and while we learn to guide it, we also learn to let it guide us."

Lissa Rankin is a self-taught artist whose career has been marked with immediate success, so much so that she decided to end her medical career as a practicing OB/GYN in order to devote her full efforts to painting and her family. She has exhibited throughout the West Coast, and has been featured in numerous style and artistic publications.
