About Brett Osborn

Brett Osborn Art

The work of Southern artist Brett Osborn functions as a visual paradox, with each painting containing apparently contradictory information in order to liberate the viewer from a single interpretation. "I often juxtapose elements from multiple seasons into a single work in order to create a sense of place without the specifics of time," writes Osborn. "My paintings form a world that is familiar and yet not specific. I want to express chill and warmth, fall and spring, light and shadow in a single image."

Working largely from memory, Osborn paints a ghostly figure (typically one of his ancestors) into the landscape, suggesting the bonds of humanity to the earth, the sense of place and belonging that we feel to our native lands. Indeed, these ethereal figures are intended to function as markers of the past, as signifiers of our shared ancestry that is shrouded in mystery.

Brett Osborn was featured in Bill Lowe's "Shadowdance" exhibition held in Atlanta in the summer of 2007. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States for two decades, including shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, California. Additionally, he was featured in a solo exhibition in Seoul, Korea, in 2003. Brett Osborn received his MFA from California State University in Long Beach, California.
