California based painter Steve Sas Schwartz creates psychologically compelling and aesthetically beautiful portraits, each rendered with a distinctive treatment of line. “My paintings are conceptually driven towards beautiful ends. They are about capturing an essence, an instant depicted in space,” writes the artist, “A linear depiction at once cuts to the soul, and is abstract.”

“Schwartz’s body of work has solved aesthetic problems by inventing a compositional technique that fuses opposites and contrary states of mind…texture versus linear effects, panoramic versus specific, light versus darkness, etc.,” comments Bill Lowe.

Steve Sas Schwartz has exhibited his work throughout the country for over 25 years, including several group and solo shows with the Bill Lowe Gallery. Schwartz earned an MFA from Columbia University in New York, in addition to studying at the University of California in Berkeley. His work has been featured in several art and design publications, and is included in such public collections as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
