About Markus Lupertz

Markus Lupertz Statues

The monumental sculpture of critically-acclaimed German artist Markus Lüpertz strips the veneer from primordial forms and styles, thereby exposing the rawness of the human condition. Drawing upon archaic themes and figurative poses, Lüpertz simultaneously reinvigorates and invalidates his classical references.

"Lüpertz's sculpture is an astonishing reinvention of figurative sculpture, even more crucially, the consummate statement of the modernist vision of the figure: the figure as body ego - the first ego, as Freud said, that is, the most primitive and organic and physical ego. This raw figure challenges and undoes the idealist vision of the figure as sublime or transcendental form, which has dominated Western art since antiquity," writes Donald Kuspit, one of America's most distinguished art critics and professors.

Lüpertz has exhibited worldwide for over 40 years, including solo exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Paris, Vienna, London, and Amsterdam. His work has been shown in numerous "Documenta" annual exhibitions held in Kassel, Germany, as well as the First Berlin Biennale held in 1974. Lüpertz has been an art professor throughout Germany, including positions held at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenen Kunst in Karlsruhe, and the renowned Staatlichen Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf.
