William Morris at the Lowe Gallery
Born in Carmel, California, William Morris began working with Dale Chilhuly at the Pilchuck Glass School at the young age of 19. Since then, he has enjoyed immense success throughout his career, and is a recipient of numerous esteemed awards, including an individual grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Although Morris is currently retired, he spent the past 30 years exploring the collective unconsciousness in his hand-blown glass. His work has been showcased in the public collections of museums throughout the world. William Morris utilizes cultural influences from Mesoamerican and Andean peoples of Central and South America, as well as Egyptian, African, and Native American traditions. Despite creating art for 30 years, he never replicates or imitates actual artifacts or specific imagery. Morris simply seeks to evoke an affinity with the past rather than reproduce it.
