Donald Sultan: Unique Art and Materials

Even though he was born in the laidback community of Asheville, North Carolina, in 1952, Donald Sultan currently lives and works in the hustle and bustle of New York. A painter, printmaker, and sculptor, his first one-man show can be traced back to 1977. Since then, Sultan has been given the opportunity to showcase his work in the exhibitions of premier galleries and museums throughout the world. Donald Sultan is best known for his large-scale works of fruit, flowers, and other objects, which are typically set against a dark, jet-black background. Donald Sultan has one particularly interesting technique wherein he employs masonite and vinyl floor tiles for his art. While he also paints, Sultan’s paintings can be categorized as still-life. Donald Sultan takes an innovative approach to subject matter in his work that most would consider “mundane,” and is currently thought of as an iconic figure in the world of contemporary art.
